Old Lane Adventures - 2017 Events
About Our Historic Motoring Tours
Old Lane Adventures organises and leads self-drive historic motoring tours for
owners/drivers of cars that have a classic or historic appeal. Our trips are always to
places where the roads allow us to enjoy the thrills of driving, without any of the
expense or risk of racing or rallying. We aim to make your trip both memorable and
exciting – a true adventure.

July 1932 saw the works team of Talbot 105 Vanden Plas Tourers sweep the board with an emphatic
victory in the International Alpine Trial. We have celebrated this achievement on a number of
previous occasions, and July 2017 sees us setting out to mark the 85th anniversary of this feat,
celebrating again the first time in the history of the Alpine Trials that a team had succeeded in
gaining not one single penalty point.
The proposed route
Our adventure starts north of Reims on the evening of Saturday 1st July. The outline route, subject
to confirmation, is:
Day One – Sunday 2nd July: Reims to Heitersheim, Germany. South through France, crossing passes
in the Vosges Mountains, before heading over the Rhine near Colmar into the Black Forest to our
hotel in Heitersheim.
Day Two – Monday 3rd July: Heitersheim to Livigno, Italy. After a pleasant run through the Black
Forest, we hit the Swiss motorways for a faster transit to Davos, where we pick up the 1932 route.
The Fluella Pass will definitely bring a smile to the face of every Talbot driver, before heading
through the Munt la Schera tunnel into Livigno. Stay for two nights in Livigno.
Day Three – Tuesday 4th July: Mountains and passes around Livigno. Much to choose from, including
Umbrail, Gavia, Bernina and the mighty Stelvio.
Day Four – Wednesday 5th July: Livigno to Meiringen, Switzerland. Again, we follow several sections
from the 1932 route, including the Splugen and San Bernardino Passes. Our route into Meiringen,
where we stay for two nights, takes us over the St Gotthard and Susten Passes.
Day Five – Thursday 6th July: Mountains and passes around Meiringen. Again, we are spoilt for
choice. There are several routes to choose today, with the Grimsel, Furka and Nufenen Passes on
offer. You may also wish to head over to Grindelwald and Wengen. Second night in Meiringen.
Day Six – Friday 7th July: Meiringen to Séez. We run along the line of the Rhône, from its source on
the Grimsel Pass to Martigny, where we head south over the Grand and Petit St Bernard Passes.
Day Seven – Saturday 8th July: Our final day together. Our route takes us north over some of the
spectacular sections of the Route des Grandes Alpes, then heading across Switzerland to our final
hotel in Goumois, in the French Jura.
Our adventure will conclude with a final celebration dinner, an occasional sherbet, the odd exchange
of rumour and myth about the week, and the presentation of awards to all successful Alpine teams.
And finally – Sunday 9th July: We all head for home, or the next tour!
Who is the tour for?
We celebrate the Talbot victory in the 1932 Alpine Trial, and this event is open to all those who love
Alpine motoring, whether in a pre-war Talbot or not. The first 12 places are reserved for Talbots, and
we encourage all Alpine enthusiasts and their friends to join this journey of celebration. Cars of a
type that took part in Alpine Trials and Rallies will be particularly welcome. We'd like to keep the
numbers to a maximum of about 15 cars. Early booking will secure your place on the tour.
Tour Costs and booking
The provisional price for this event is £1250 per person based on sharing a twin or double room and
at today’s euro rate of 1.10 to the £. The supplement for single rooms will be £225 per person, £325
if travelling solo. It’s difficult to nail down the euro exchange rate at the moment, and I’d like to pass
on any benefit that might arise between now and July. Included will be:
• Eight nights half-board
• Three or four-course dinner each night
• Wine with dinner
• Rally pack including rally plates and route book
• Finishers’ awards and other daily trophies
• Unlimited fun!
Booking
Please complete the attached booking form and return it with your deposit of £300 per car – details
are on the form. If paying by cheque, please enclose it with your form. Or you may pay
electronically, details for which are also on the Booking Form. The balance is due by 20th May 2017,
and your road book and final instructions will be sent to you in early June.
Daily routes
On days where we need to cover the ground to reach our target destinations, we may cover up to
240 miles, some on motorways, but this will not be the norm. If you prefer, you may choose shorter
and less challenging routes on most days. When we stay for two nights, the choice of what to do on
the middle day is entirely up to you. The primary goal is to enjoy the spectacular mountains, and to
get safely to the hotel each evening.
Anything else?
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions not answered here. I look forward to
another excellent Alpine motoring week with you.
